Why Vimmerby is so special for families

Vimmerby is Astrid Lindgren's birthplace — and the small town shows it. Pippi Longstocking, Michel of Lönneberga and the Brothers Lionheart aren't just book characters here, but walk-through worlds. For families with children roughly between three and twelve, a day in Vimmerby is often the highlight of the whole Sweden trip.

Astrid Lindgren's World: what children and parents can expect

The theme park Astrid Lindgren's World deliberately skips rollercoasters and rides in favour of faithfully recreated settings from the books — Villa Villekulla, Bullerbyn, the robbers' castle. Actors perform the scenes live, often with direct participation from the youngest visitors. For smaller children this is often more memorable than any rollercoaster, and pleasantly relaxed for parents, since much of it happens over short distances and at a gentle pace.

A full day's visit is realistic — with younger children, plan plenty of breaks. The park is open seasonally, usually during the Swedish summer holidays and the surrounding weeks; the official park website is the most reliable source for current opening times and ticket prices.

The ideal day's schedule from Ullevi

From Ullevi in Totebo it's about 26 kilometres to Vimmerby — roughly half an hour's drive in normal traffic. That allows for a relaxed rhythm: set off early in the morning, explore the park without rushing, and be back in the afternoon before the children get tired.

This is exactly where a holiday home has the edge over a hotel room near the park: after the park, what's waiting at Ullevi isn't a cramped room but your own garden with a playground — and Lake Nässjön, less than two hundred metres away, for cooling off after a warm day.

Ullevi offers three bedrooms for up to six guests, including a dedicated children's room — the house was designed for families from the start, not adapted for them afterwards. Travelling with several children or as a multi-generation family, you'll genuinely find room to retreat here.
